North Devon has some of the most consistent and varied surf in the UK, and being based right on Woolacombe's doorstep, we're lucky enough to surf this stretch of coast year-round. Whether you're visiting for a week or moving here properly, here's our honest, local rundown of where to paddle out.
Woolacombe Beach
Our home break, and for good reason. Woolacombe is a long, sandy beach break that handles a wide swell and wind range, which means there's almost always somewhere along its length working. The size and length of the beach also spreads crowds out well compared to some of Devon's smaller spots. It's a genuinely great learning beach — forgiving sand bottom, lifeguarded in season, and a gentler wave than some neighbouring breaks , but it also throws up quality peaks for more experienced surfers further along the beach, particularly around low to mid tide.
Croyde Bay
A short drive south, Croyde has a reputation as one of the best beach breaks in the country, and it's well earned. The bay is more exposed and the sandbanks here tend to produce punchier, more powerful waves than Woolacombe, especially on a solid swell. It's a fantastic spot once you're comfortable in the water, but it can be unforgiving for complete beginners, the shore break alone catches people out. Worth watching from the beach for ten minutes before you paddle out if you don't know it.
Saunton Sands
Saunton is the beach to head to as a learner or when everywhere else is overcrowded. Its sheer length spreads the crowd. It's also a gentler, more consistent wave than Croyde, making it a solid middle-ground option for improving surfers.
Putsborough
Technically the southern end of the Woolacombe/Saunton stretch, Putsborough is worth knowing about specifically for its tidal quirks, it can hold a decent wave on tide states when the rest of the bay has gone flat or messy. Parking is more limited here, so it tends to stay quieter, which is part of the appeal.
A Note on Tides and Conditions
North Devon's beach breaks are heavily tide-dependent, and the "best" spot on any given day genuinely changes with the swell direction, wind, and tide state. If you're new to the area, the honest answer is: check the forecast, and if you're unsure, ask in the shop. We're on the water most days and always happy to point you in the right direction rather than send you somewhere that's going to be a washing-machine mess.
